The FEI is looking for a Senior Legal Counsel (Regulatory, Commercial & Contracts) with 100% rate of activity. The position is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is available as of 1 August 2025 or upon agreement.
Senior Legal Counsel
Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the Director, Legal, the Senior Legal Counsel (Regulatory, Commercial & Contracts) is responsible for providing legal support to other FEI departments and to deal with all legal issues related to stakeholders/third-parties. To draft, negotiate, and review agreements, mainly sponsorship, licensing, media and organisation of equestrian events. Primary areas of responsibility include: Championships and Finals, National Federations, Rules and Regulations, and Contracts.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide commercial legal support to the FEI Commercial, Marketing and Communications Department and servicing their needs, such as drafting and review of sponsorship, license, and media agreements;
- Oversight and management of the bid/allocation processes for FEI Named Events (preparation of bid guide, liaising with bidders/NFs on bids, drafting/negotiation of host agreements, liaising with FEI Departments to finalise bidding documents, liaising with FEI Departments/Technical Committees/Regional Groups for review of bids, presentation of bids to FEI Board, post allocation follow-up with bidders, review/revision of bid related policies);
- General Legal support on business and sport related issues (e.g. drafting and review of FEI non-commercial agreements, IT agreements, NDAs, research agreements etc.);
- Participation in the drafting, reviewing, and interpretation of FEI Rules and Regulations;
- Case management of third-party’s infringement of FEI Rules and Regulations, appeals to FEI Tribunal/Court of Arbitration for Sport;
- Ensuring compliance with internal processes;
- Intellectual Property and trademark protection matters;
- Liaising with stakeholders (athletes, National Federations, etc) with respect to legal issues related to sport and answering legal queries from stakeholders;
- Providing legal advice on communications and crisis management;
- Attending major FEI Events to provide on-site, event related advice; management of legal aspects of on-site issues; advising Officials, NFs etc. on processes;
- Leadership and oversight of Legal Counsel team member.
Position Requirements
- Qualified lawyer with relevant professional qualifications in the legal field; postgraduate qualifications in sports law are a strong asset.
- A minimum of 7 years' experience in sports law, with international exposure.
- Experience in negotiations and managing complex litigation cases within high pressure contexts.
- Solid experience working with governing bodies and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience in leading and managing legal counsel(s).
- Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office and software to support planning, documentation, and tracking processes.
- Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in other languages is a plus.
